 Namaste, I once read a comment that went something like this :” I have experienced many good and bad adventures in my life, some of which actually really happened. “

This comes as a result of our ever active minds, constantly playing out these dramas for us. So much so that we have more mental experiences than actual physical realities. How many times do we start a thought, mostly in fear, then we elaborate and create the most amazing non-event resulting in a deep sense of stress as the physical body responds to the mental activity ? We need to detach from these thoughts, not follow them through and feed them with more attention. Detach and acknowledge them but not feed them. This way we can control our stress levels by showing observation but non  attachment to our thoughts, both positive as well as negative. Negative thoughts result in the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, the fight or flight responses will then be ready to respond. This can be exhausting, overtaxing and even result in disease if done often enough. It fully depletes the energy levels.By attaching to a thought, we become so sucked into the drama, we are unable to focus on our tasks we need to complete.This is human nature, by simply behaving in this way we will never achieve any sense of inner peace. “When your thoughts pass, you will be in the clear sky of your mind.”

Meditation, of any style, is perfect for teaching you this observation and non attachment. This new tool will be of great benefit when you are on your mats as well. Meditation teaches us what I refer to as the 3 R’s.  Relaxation, Release and Revive. These 3 are inseparable and cannot work alone. Without relaxation you cannot revive, without releasing you cannot fully relax etc.  Yoga teaches us that we need to move quietly into a posture, stay in it with sthira and sukha, (steadiness and comfort) to fully receive the intended benefits of the postures. Initially we need to build up enough strength to be able to hold the postures long enough for relaxation to take place, but over time, it does happen and then we start experiencing AHA moment on our mats.  These moments are worth their weight in gold for the rewards they bring to the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies.

So keeping this in mind, take care to not neglect your time with yourself on your own private magic carpet !

Mid year 2015

So I find myself happily back at home after being on the road for a good few months, since 12th April in fact. Here we are half way through 2015 and our winter solstice has been and gone. As much as I love travel and sharing my passions for both nature and Yoga, it is always wonderful to come home to the space I have created for my own peace and quiet. So my love of yoga and adventure took me into the Bush and the Beach for 4 weeks with a group of visually impaired Germans. We had so much fun with them, they are so adventurous and teach us so much about how to appreciate everything we have and to live in each and every moment. I had them surfing in Sodwana Bay, yes, really I have photos to prove it ! A very wild boat trip 2km out to sea to snorkel a shallow reef , kayaking, game drives, yoga and so much more ! I have learned that we are either living in fear or in love, these two emotions rule all the others. It is fear that prevents us from being the best we can be, it's fear that stops us from truly living. It is through love that we find our passion, see light in all others and really LIVE, as in THRIVE. It is my deepest desire to stay permanently in this state of LOVE, so I can inspire, enjoy and dance through the rest of my life with ease, compassion and much joy. If we take our time on our mats, both for the asana practice and then more importantly for the meditation sitting, we will find this inner peace, this Love which we can then take off the mats and out into our daily lives. This is the only way to make positive changes so urgently needed in our world today.

BL:   ... a life lived with love, means that if you bring love and operate from your heart, versus operating from your head there is a profound difference in the world you experience and create. I personally have an understanding of this because my career as a research scientist was almost all coming from my head, from my thinking. And while I was very successful in that career, the moment I was given the opportunity to see how biology actually works and to recognize the Consciousness in the system, that realization didn't hit my head. It hit my heart. Tears were running down my face and I felt my heart for the first time after 40 years or so of being in my head. I refer to it as my heart orgasm.
   My heart opened up to realize the love of being on this planet with the most beautiful, ecosystem and the intricate interconnection of all the animals, plants and of course the humans. My life completely changed at that moment and that was the beginning of my first steps toward the conclusion that I write about: that most people believe that you die and if you live well you go off to someplace called heaven. I would like to suggest an alternative understanding, that we are born into heaven, and this is a place where we are creative. This is where we manifest our dreams. Most of our ideas of heaven are really based on their life on earth so to find it somewhere else is silly.  All the visions and dreams that we talk about are all doable right here.
   That's really what's being created with the experience of Uplift - the realization that we can change the whole story right now. We don't need to try to fight the old story. We simply need to walk outside the old story and build a new story. People will leave the old story when they see a new story working. Every individual who changes their own story, is changing the vibrational environment within which we live. We can have the spontaneous remission of the planet's ills and we can change the environment by just changing who we are. Love This Life Festival Kzn

Namaste, Hari Om and IKosi Nathi. As I sigh into my couch and settle down with my laptop to write this article I feel huge gratitude for my never ending high energy levels ! Putting this event together really did take its toll and I opened the festival with a short meditation for peace on saturday with dark marks under my eyes and not nearly as much mental clarity as I am used to. The day proceeded to unfold in an orderly and well attended fashion, despite my fears and sense of responsibility to one and all. I take out of this a very good lesson as I move forward on my yogic journey. Have faith ! Have a plan, work hard to achieve it, and then have the faith to allow things to unfold without attachment to the outcome. I guess its a good example of the word "equanimity" that I first heard while on the hardest 10 day Vipassana retreat of my life to date ! Equanimity, is a state of psychological stability and composure which is undisturbed by experience of or exposure to emotions, pain, or other phenomena that may cause others to lose the balance of their mind. While it sounds wonderful, in reality its not so easy.I think we need to bring this word into the upcoming festive season in order to try and maintain our inner balance throughout. Despite our well meant decisions to take this year easy and NOT fall into the trap of silly season madness, it is difficult maintaining our equalibrium when the pressures of celebrating being happy and jovial surround us. Maybe the key to keeping this equanimity throughout is to keep it simple. Why not go back to basics and remember that its the gift of life we are celebrating here, so  avoid celebrating this by causing pain and suffering in the lives of others (animals included). To help the environment as well as avoid unnecessary over spending, I will be gifting tokens of my energy to friends and family. Time and energy are the most precious gifts of all, so this is what I will be offering. My "specialities" to my loved ones and in doing so I remove the angst and fever pitched shopping from weeks to come ! I do hope you are all able to find your own equanimity in the midst of it all. Deep gratitude for this ever challenging life of ours, take it out the studio and into your lives. Ahimsa

So here we are again rising on the crest of the wave towards Summer. (for those of us down south) . This is my favourite of all seasons. It is a time where I feel most energised, need less fuel and want to be as creative as possible. For me the day starts with the first chirping of the birds, the promise of the new day and all the adventures and possibilities it brings. If I do not make time to sit quietly in contemplation or meditation before starting my day, it just does not unfold with as much ease or flow. The best time for me is 4.30 am as it is still quiet and calm outside. As we all know now, we are all just bundles of energy, vibrations at different frequencies. These vibrations predict our energy levels the state of health of the body , mind and spirit. If we lead sluggish inactive lives, energy blockages are formed and naturally this prevents the flow of energy throughout all of the layers. A good open flow results in good health which radiates outwards and is tangible in all ways. Blockages however, result in lethargy, illness and mental sluggishness. Ironically it is through movement that we are better able to become still and learn how to create the "heaven on earth" we all desire. The mind is also movement or energy. The body is the manifestation of this movement. By moving the body and releasing blocked energy, allowing the natural flow of energy, we are assured of a calmer more peaceful mind. This in turn keeps better control over our emotions as well as our spiritual state. We then have more focus and mental clarity with a better chance for manifesting our deepest desires. We cannot create what we have not yet identified as a desire. We are all spirits having a physical experience as we ride the rivers of life together. Once we grow in coherance we become co-creators of this incredible universe. The rivers of life carry us along towards the ocean, where we once again meld into oneness. A drop in the all encompassing mass of oceans. Get moving so you can find stillness. By being still you will find your flow. Join us for our last dolphin/yoga therapy 15-21st October into Mozambique. Yoga as a daily practice

The original purpose of yoga practice is to influence, integrate and harmonise all of the 5 energetic layers of the human being. These koshas (sanskrit name) are energetic layers or sheaths that move from the outermost layer of skin to the deep spiritual core, moving from the more dense physical body to the much lighter spiritual body. These make up the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual or soul bodies. Yoga works on the physical body by alleviating stiffness, removing physical blockages such as tiredness and various diseases by moving the energy around as it was designed to do. It works on the energy body by regenerating the different organs and systems with rejuvenating energy. Yoga influences the mental state by balancing the left and right hemispheres of the brain with regular asanas and breathing techniques. It helps to strengthen the mental concentration, self discipline and therefore helps develop awareness of the spiritual body for meditation and thus leads to a higher sense of self awareness. By following a simple 30 minute daily routine, yoga will help increase not only your quantity, but more importantly your quality of life.

Walk gently with Grace and Ease !

Well here we are again just weeks away from winding down for the year 2013 ! The last 2 months of the year seem to be more pressurised than any others .  There’s  end of year exams,  end of year  targets to be met, end of year  functions to be arranged and of course, the decisions to be made about where and with whom  Christmas will be shared. I would like to take this opportunity to wish my students on the teacher Training course as well as ALL students everywhere, all of the very best in their studies and preparations for finals.

If you have started with short sittings of meditation practice you will most definitely see how you manage the year end pressures with gentle ease and grace. Take just 10-15 minutes a day to enhance your life, it’s that easy ! We are leaving for the last yoga/dolphin therapy trip  for 2013 on 24th to 30th November and still have 2 beds left. This is R5900 pp sharing and is inclusive of transport to and from King Shaka airport, dinner, bed and breakfast, x 2 daily yoga asanas, pranayamas and meditations plus  x 2 trips on dolphin boat. It is a wonderful adventure offering a combination of relaxation with dolphin encounters as well as taking your Yoga a little deeper. We stay right on the beach so are able to enjoy sun salutations with nothing between us and the sun we are celebrating except of  course, the Indian ocean !  I look forward to hearing from anyone interested in joining us for this excursion.

How to achieve pure joy

“May we bring our full hearted attention to ourselves and each other, that the world around us may flourish in tender care ! “

Greetings to all you wonderful readers, I hope this finds you in great spirits and pure joy ! Staying in the vein of our previous article that our thoughts make what we are, what we manifest and how we experience our lives, the above quote is the thought for this week. If we bring our full awareness to ourselves, then and only then will we realise how we feel when someone is nasty or negative towards us. By placing this focus on how we ourselves respond to this, we will become aware of the power this negativity has upon our own energy. It is only when we learn to let go of the negativity, not rise to it or attach to it, that we are able to live our lives in a more calm and balanced way. Once we achieve this, it is then that we are able to be more mindful of our own actions towards each other.  When we start to treat our friends, family and fellow creatures on this great earth with love and compassion, we can start to truly LIVE and walk our talk.

It may sound difficult to be non-attached, but just like everything else, it requires training. The best way to do this is to start meditating. I have sometimes found that the very word “meditation” conjures images of eastern religions, idol worship and other such disturbing ideas. This is in fact not true. To meditate actually means the art of focusing 100% of your attention to one area. The benefits on health alone is a reason to start this practice. If you take a few minutes each day, sit in a comfortable position, either on the floor, or even on a chair, keep the spine erect, relax the neck and shoulders, lightly close the eyes and gently bring attention to your breath, you have started the process.  Become fully aware of the breath going in the nostrils and the slightly warmer air going out the nostrils. This is indeed a difficult thing as the mind jumps around from this to that and to the next thing. Try to keep bringing the attention back to the breath, you might need to do this a hundred times during the 3-5 minutes of sitting, but with practice you will be able to hold attention on the breath for longer each time.  Just as the physical body needs to practice being still, so will the mind learn what you want from it. Over a few weeks you can build this sitting up to about 15-20 minutes. The health benefits alone are worth making this time for practice. Try it, be sure to let me know of any improvements in health, stress levels, concentration and emotions.

Avoidance of harm

In our yogic philosophy we adhere to the idea of the word AHIMSA, this is a Sanskrit word (ancient Indian language) and basically means “no harm to any living thing through thought, action or deed.” Now I am always on about this branch of the Yogic philosophy because I can only imagine the peace, harmony and love we could experience on this Earth if we all tried to adhere to this rule. Allow yourself  a few moments to take in these words, “avoidance of harm to any living creature” . That has to include yourself, this  then implies  such things as healthy eating to avoid harm, living a healthy lifestyle, for same reason. Being kind, considerate and compassionate to yourself and all other beings. Avoiding  the uneccesary killing of creatures merely  to satisfy your tastebuds. Taking this rule to its deepest, avoiding harmful thoughts or intentions ! That is by far the hardest to achieve, as thoughts occur before we have even realized what we are doing. If you truly try to adhere to this, it certainly helps to be mindful of each and every moment, each thought even before it manifests itself and totally aware of the toxic effect on our mind and bodies with harmful ideas and thoughts. We have about 70 000 thoughts on average per day. So many of these are dwelling on things we’ve said, maybe even things unsaid, rehashing mistakes from past and planning strategies for the future. The result is that we waste valuable energy and fill our minds with harmful and negative thoughts. These thoughts arise as a frequency, a vibration of energy and get held in our cells, in our joints and internal organs. This frequency , influences every cell in our bodies, Make enough negative thoughts and eventually the very cells will all be vibrating in the same negative frequency. I’m sure we have all experienced a sad or emotional time in our lives. We dwell on this and it’s a downward spiral from emotional sadness to depression and eventually dis-ease. This is an example of exactly just how we can create our own health. Of course it’s not quite as simple as only our thoughts, but they play an enormous role in the way our cells operate and function. Will we intentionally harm ourselves, I think not. So all you need to do is rethink the way you think. Be aware of the thoughts you have, limit yourself to the exposure of negative feedback (ie. News media etc.), make a point of verbally “patting yourself on the back each and every day” re-enforce the beauty and joy that life IS. Limit or restrict your actions that you know cause harm to others and take notice of how your health and joy is influenced. Being well is so much more than the absence of disease. It is moving beyond the point of being free of illness to experiencing optimal health. Wellness is not a static state, our levels of wellness change all the time. By taking responsibility of our physical health as well as the mental health, we can improve our level of wellness. This will have a profound influence of not just yourself, but flow over to all of those around you as well as  throughout your community. If we can achieve this then the entire health of the planet will improve. It’s the 100 monkey’s effect. Try living just a little bit of Ahimsa for a week and see the results, feel the outcome and be filled with your natural right to experience a life filled with joy.
