Yoga as a daily practice

The original purpose of yoga practice is to influence, integrate and harmonise all of the 5 energetic layers of the human being. These koshas (sanskrit name) are energetic layers or sheaths that move from the outermost layer of skin to the deep spiritual core, moving from the more dense physical body to the much lighter spiritual body. These make up the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual or soul bodies. Yoga works on the physical body by alleviating stiffness, removing physical blockages such as tiredness and various diseases by moving the energy around as it was designed to do. It works on the energy body by regenerating the different organs and systems with rejuvenating energy. Yoga influences the mental state by balancing the left and right hemispheres of the brain with regular asanas and breathing techniques. It helps to strengthen the mental concentration, self discipline and therefore helps develop awareness of the spiritual body for meditation and thus leads to a higher sense of self awareness. By following a simple 30 minute daily routine, yoga will help increase not only your quantity, but more importantly your quality of life.

"If you don't take care of your body, where will you live ?"

Avoidance of harm
4.7/5 rating (7 votes)

Ahimsa

In our yogic philosophy we adhere to the idea of the word AHIMSA, this is a Sanskrit word (ancient Indian language) and basically means “no harm to any living thing through thought, action or deed.” Now I am always on about this branch of the Yogic philosophy because I can only imagine the peace, harmony and love we could experience on this Earth if we all tried to adhere to this rule. Allow yourself  a few moments to take in these words, “avoidance of harm to any living creature” . That has to include yourself, this  then implies  such things as healthy eating to avoid harm, living a healthy lifestyle, for same reason. Being kind, considerate and compassionate to yourself and all other beings. Avoiding  the uneccesary killing of creatures merely  to satisfy your tastebuds. Taking this rule to its deepest, avoiding harmful thoughts or intentions ! That is by far the hardest to achieve, as thoughts occur before we have even realized what we are doing. If you truly try to adhere to this, it certainly helps to be mindful of each and every moment, each thought even before it manifests itself and totally aware of the toxic effect on our mind and bodies with harmful ideas and thoughts. We have about 70 000 thoughts on average per day. So many of these are dwelling on things we’ve said, maybe even things unsaid, rehashing mistakes from past and planning strategies for the future. The result is that we waste valuable energy and fill our minds with harmful and negative thoughts. These thoughts arise as a frequency, a vibration of energy and get held in our cells, in our joints and internal organs. This frequency , influences every cell in our bodies, Make enough negative thoughts and eventually the very cells will all be vibrating in the same negative frequency. I’m sure we have all experienced a sad or emotional time in our lives. We dwell on this and it’s a downward spiral from emotional sadness to depression and eventually dis-ease. This is an example of exactly just how we can create our own health. Of course it’s not quite as simple as only our thoughts, but they play an enormous role in the way our cells operate and function. Will we intentionally harm ourselves, I think not. So all you need to do is rethink the way you think. Be aware of the thoughts you have, limit yourself to the exposure of negative feedback (ie. News media etc.), make a point of verbally “patting yourself on the back each and every day” re-enforce the beauty and joy that life IS. Limit or restrict your actions that you know cause harm to others and take notice of how your health and joy is influenced. Being well is so much more than the absence of disease. It is moving beyond the point of being free of illness to experiencing optimal health. Wellness is not a static state, our levels of wellness change all the time. By taking responsibility of our physical health as well as the mental health, we can improve our level of wellness. This will have a profound influence of not just yourself, but flow over to all of those around you as well as  throughout your community. If we can achieve this then the entire health of the planet will improve. It’s the 100 monkey’s effect. Try living just a little bit of Ahimsa for a week and see the results, feel the outcome and be filled with your natural right to experience a life filled with joy.

Detox your mind

Pursuit of happiness !

Detox your mind

I have finally figured out that life really is just one big "balancing act". We are mostly so busy wearing all the different "hats" we need to, to accomplish what we want (or think we want) , that we actually are at risk of allowing LIFE to pass us by. I watch young moms ferrying children from point A to B, cricket to chess to dance to who knows where . Well do I remember those frantic days, not with as many fond memories as one would like to think. I do have many memories of trying to juggle my business with transporting my children on school outings, of rushing to do the grocery shopping while one of the children were at swimming and the other one was playing at a friends home. Not much time spent in the gift of life back then, in the present and that was the crime of the century ! Why did we feel it so very necessary for our children to be exposed to so many different activities ? When i was at school, we had to participate in 2 summer and 2 winter activities. These were provided by the school , on the school premises and were compulsory ! Maybe we should re-introduce this and have more stay at home moms planting vegetable gardens to feed their families. Maybe this would help to bring the stress levels to a more tolerable level. Anyway, the whole point of this article is to once again draw attention to the most fundamental need of humankind in this world today, more personalised family time and time with ourselves. Everywhere you look, couples, families , friends are out socialising but mostly texting on their phones ! We are missing the point of what "get togethers" actually mean. In a nutshell,  it means that you need to communicate,  face to face, up close and personal with the people in the room/garden/car etc. It means sharing your thoughts, feelings and ideas with loved ones, not yearning to be elsewhere or fearful of missing out on something maybe more interesting. Modern technology has so de-personalised our daily lives, I wonder if we will actually move to a point where we toss cell phones and smart phones etc. aside and take back control of what we would like to think, feel, experience and enjoy. Or at the very least, go out on an excursion, a walk on the beach, a shopping trip, without one of these devices keeping us connected to the HUB, of what we think to be the wheel of our lives. Try it, just once this week. Empower yourself, put IT down and walk away out of the house, be with yourself/friend/children and just BE ! Feel it and enjoy it ! Yes, that's freedom, that's detoxing the mind, just for a short moment. If we manage to do this once a day, what a start in the right direction !!

Happiness is ..... being a human being !

“Happiness depends on ourselves.”according to Aristotle.

Lots of love, light, peace and wisdom

Wellness Fair KZN

We all know that our health is indeed our wealth. Yet it is still the most taken for granted of all things in our lives. Only when we have a sore throat, toothache, belly upset or something, are we aware of just how much pain we could be in, day in and day out if we were to succumb to some dis "ease." Our health is so effected by what we eat, breathe, think and do, yet even this we are mostly unaware of. Lets make a conscious effort, from right here, right now, to live in our physical bodies, aware of the energy body as well as the mental and spiritual bodies. These 4 bodies live together, are an integral part of each other and so influence one another, we cannot treat them as if they are separate. From this moment, take charge, breathe with awareness, shop with awareness, eat with awareness and then, most difficult of all, think with awareness. I will write more next time on the actual different layers of these bodies to help you understand them better.

In closing, please support our WELLNESS FAIR in KZN at Umhlali primary school, sat 8th June 9am to 5.30pm . You can view the events timetable on www.wellnessfairkzn.com Lots of activities for the whole family with healthy foods and stalls of interest.

A cleansing breathing technique

A cleansing breathing technique

All living creatures depend on the breath

For it is the sustaining force of life itself,

Which determines how long we may live

Those who revere breath as a gift from the Universe

Shall live to complete their full span of life.

Upanishad.

So here we move into a new section of breath awareness for the next few days of practice.

Once again, sit comfortably, spine erect and shoulders relaxed. Try to balance each vertebra gently and naturally above the other. (Allowing  the natural curvatures of the spine without hyper extending them.) Take a few moments to still your physical body as well as the mind. Breathe in deeply and fully with absolute awareness. Imagine a candle being held in front of your nostrils, on your exhalation blow a short and sudden blast of air out of both nostrils trying to snuff out the imaginary flame. Once again breathe in with both nostrils and then puff the air out and blow the candle out. You keep repeating this action with awareness to the out breath not on the in breath. You will automatically breathe in, so focus on sharp out breath. The abdominals will contract on the sharp exhalation. Make sure your shoulders and the rest of your body remains as still as possible. You will be aiming at 2 out breaths per second and to be able to continue for at least 300 repetitions. Build up to this slowly and be sure to keep it relaxed and without any strain at all. Start with a few rounds of say 30, followed by a deep full inhalation and exhalation, repeat 30 again and so on. Repeat this for a week and then increase the repetitions to 60 or 100 in a round. Eventually graduate  to 300 without stopping.

This is a cleansing breathing technique and will maybe make you feel like coughing a little, it is very effective in cleansing the lungs and oxygenating the blood.

It is very important to master this technique before moving on to any of the others.

I hope you enjoy it and do not hesitate to mail for more information if it is not clearly explained for you.

Eat live to live !

Eat live to live !

Namaste, you know the old agage  “You are what you eat” ?  Well I have known it for many years and still I find myself being surprised when I literally run out of fuel. This past week I have been very busy with the planning stages of a wellness fair for KZN, here in Umlali. This led to many meetings, mostly in restaurants. I tried as much as humanly possible to choose the healthiest option off the menu, eg. a salad with nuts and no creamy dressing as opposed to say fries and starch. Even with doing that, I fell absolutely flat yesterday afternoon. It is very rare that I take an afternoon lie down, never mind a nap.  Yesterday I volunteered at the litchi market for primates Africa and went home to find myself fast asleep for about 2 hours of my afternoon !  I was puzzled at first and then put 2 and 2 together. With 2 of my meals a day for the last 5 days, mostly been at restaurants, I was depleted of the “normal” nutritional food my body is used to! I am sure if everyone took  the time to monitor their eating behaviour, you will soon start to see and feel the effects of just how your food does influence both your energy levels and your moods. Luckily for us here in Ballito we have “Home Grown” where you can collect a bag of organically grown, farm fresh produce every Friday afternoon. I got a beautiful bag this week with the following in : 1 pineapple, 7 bananas, 7 sweet potatoes, 4 potatoes, green beans, cherry tomatoes(about 1kg) 3 different color peppers, 1 very large cucumber(I haven’t eaten this for the longest time as they are sprayed the MOST), mint, chillies and lettuce (3 different) . All of these fresh nutrient full and chemical free heavenly produce ! I named their bag, orgasmically organic ! I promptly made myself the hugest salad with ALL of the ingredients bar the potatoes and bananas. I added a handful of roasted almonds, tossed in a teaspoon of flaxseed oil, herbal salt and splash of balsamic ! My energy levels were back to normal in about 45 minutes ! Try it for yourself, you will not regret it. If you still need convincing, google chemicals  or pesticides and their affects on the central nervous system. The e mail address for orders from home grown is This email address is being protected from spambots. My next part of the Yogic journey

Yoga Safari

The next part of my Yogic journey is about to begin. I have collected my foreign exchange, packed my torch, mosquito repellant, immodiums, clothing I consider to be "moral" and not revealing and i'm busy enjoying the last few comforts of home. It is with mixed feelings that I dwell on what lies ahead of me. I am off to my Ashram in Nasik, India for a month of study, both physical and mental. This time around I am so much more organised. I still arrive at the most ungodly hour of 12.30pm but have pre-arranged transportation directly to the train station for which I have already bought my ticket. The wonderful world of electronic payments and internet. So I guess you can say, I have joined up with the rest of the world, finally .

I look forward to the strict routine, daily meditations, asanas and pranayamas, delicious meals and simply heavenly sunrises and mountains. I even relish the thought of 7 days of complete silence. What i'm not excited about is amount of time we spend sitting on the floor. I find it very tough going but I guess its the discomfort that is the only thing keeping me awake for the 9pm discussions.

My previous trips have been so enjoyable, taken me so deep inside, taught me so very much that i'm anticipating some incredible experiences and new relationships with some wonderful like minded people.

I hope to return home in February with lots of new knowledge, wisdom and an even greater inner peace.

I will be coming back home to work hard on the plans for the Yoga festival on 8th June here in KZN.

Keep walking the talk, be happy

The Path of Grace

the labyrinth of life

The Path of Grace

Compliments of the Season to each and every one of you !  As the year 2012 winds down I find myself experiencing similar feelings to when I have walked the labyrinth. As you probably all know, when walking the path inwards, it is symbolic of the path towards self realization. It takes us out of the ego and to that which is within. The number of times the path takes you close to the centre and then leads you all the way out again, repeatedly, is just as it happens in our daily lives. So often we think we have discovered  the answers, only to find they have led to even deeper and more unanswerable questions. This is in fact, the journey inward. Towards  our Self . On our way inward (in the Labyrinth of life) we should work on sorting out the “stuff” that’s weighing us down. Consciously letting go of these things, ideas and fears that are holding us back from achieving all that is ours. Just as when we walk into the centre of the labyrinth, we sit and meditate, we should take stock here of how we feel, do we feel lighter, are we a cleaner page to fill with positive energy ? Once we feel this lightness of body, mind and spirit, we are empowered to boldly walk back out towards our “physical” lives and better equipped to manage them. As with the winding road inwards, so is it on the way outwards. Each time you think you are ready to embrace the world, as you touch on the outer  path, so you wind back inwards with more time to reflect, strengthen your focus until eventually you exit feeling ready, grounded and balanced. Follow this link to read more about the history of Labyrinths http://www.unitync.net/Labyrinth.html

I wish you all  the time to cleanse, reflect, let go, prepare for the new and enabled to walk boldly and confidently into 2013. May it be filled with much light, love, adventure and much yoga !

And of course AHIMSA

Ideas for a healthy meal

Ideas for a healthy meal

Ideas for a healthy eating plan

Make sure to break your fast in the morning and eat a healthy nutritious meal. Rule of thumb, breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.

Fruit , mixed with ground up nuts and seeds would be a great option.

Mixed fruit salad with a muesli sprinkle.

Fruit and yogurt, non sweetened , plain .

Cooked oats using rooibos , cinnamon, cardomon, honey etc. also with some sprinkled nuts and seeds.

See my website for ideas http://sayogasafaris.com

For lunch make sure to never combine starch and protein. So plate up a piece of protein with salad or raw or steamed veg. Or a potato with veg. or salad. Use cottage cheese and low fat mozzarella cheese instead of cheddar etc. buy a tub of hummous and use it for snacks or add on the plate for lunch with a salad. Grate raw marrows, butternut and beetroot into a mixed green salad to add colour and nutrients.

Dinner is good to have a light, watery soup. No breads here, its late and you want to eat a light meal. Popcorn is also an option and if you did not eat fruit for breakfast, have some for dinner. Make sure to eat fruit at least half an hour before any other food, this aids digestion.

Make 80% of your food be alkaline forming, ie. Vegetable and most fruits.
