Peeling back the layers

These last few weeks have been an emotional roller coaster ride for myself and many of my friends and clients ! Yes, we know the astrological explanations for most of this, yet knowing doesn't make it any easier when you are wearing your soul on your sleeve for all to see. Whenever I do some soul searching, some emotional spring cleaning, I think to myself " well, thats now done 'n dusted,  eternal peace will surely follow." Mmn, well the different layers of our complex selves have different ideas. Just when we think we have worked through all of our emotional "issues", something else rises to the surface. This can either be daunting, or we can feel honored by the complexities of our selves and embrace the journey home to our "true" selves. Knowing this journey can never be truly over, so long as we are in this physical body, there will be a certain amount of cellular work to be done. I believe the main reason for this is due to the very lifestyles we lead and the things we are exposed to on a daily basis. My saviours to date are my children, my partner, my teachers and actually above all, my YOGA. If it wasn't for my yoga, which takes me to my Source, my essence each time I go onto the mat, I know I would still be trapped in "survival" mode. As we all know this survival mode is so very basic and not very evolved at all. So today, and every moment of every day, I am deeply grateful to ALL of my teachers, my family, my friends, my students and my environment for all you have provided me with. It is thanks to all of the above that I finally feel that I am on my journey back home, to finally finding that inner quiet, that eternal peace. I now understand more fully the light hearted quote " Let go, or be dragged." I  realise that it's exactly what I need to do in order to move forward and evolve one step closer to my own essence. In order to embrace fully the glory of who we truly are, we need to abandon the fear of the unknown and step forward in true faith. "We cannot discover new shores until we have the courage to lose sight of the one we on..."

I am truly on my Yogic safari...

So with love, light and faith in the process or journey of our lives, keep living in " ahimsa'

Detox your mind

I have finally figured out that life really is just one big "balancing act". We are mostly so busy wearing all the different "hats" we need to, to accomplish what we want (or think we want) , that we actually are at risk of allowing LIFE to pass us by. I watch young moms ferrying children from point A to B, cricket to chess to dance to who knows where . Well do I remember those frantic days, not with as many fond memories as one would like to think. I do have many memories of trying to juggle my business with transporting my children on school outings, of rushing to do the grocery shopping while one of the children were at swimming and the other one was playing at a friends home. Not much time spent in the gift of life back then, in the present and that was the crime of the century ! Why did we feel it so very necessary for our children to be exposed to so many different activities ? When i was at school, we had to participate in 2 summer and 2 winter activities. These were provided by the school , on the school premises and were compulsory ! Maybe we should re-introduce this and have more stay at home moms planting vegetable gardens to feed their families. Maybe this would help to bring the stress levels to a more tolerable level. Anyway, the whole point of this article is to once again draw attention to the most fundamental need of humankind in this world today, more personalised family time and time with ourselves. Everywhere you look, couples, families , friends are out socialising but mostly texting on their phones ! We are missing the point of what "get togethers" actually mean. In a nutshell,  it means that you need to communicate,  face to face, up close and personal with the people in the room/garden/car etc. It means sharing your thoughts, feelings and ideas with loved ones, not yearning to be elsewhere or fearful of missing out on something maybe more interesting. Modern technology has so de-personalised our daily lives, I wonder if we will actually move to a point where we toss cell phones and smart phones etc. aside and take back control of what we would like to think, feel, experience and enjoy. Or at the very least, go out on an excursion, a walk on the beach, a shopping trip, without one of these devices keeping us connected to the HUB, of what we think to be the wheel of our lives. Try it, just once this week. Empower yourself, put IT down and walk away out of the house, be with yourself/friend/children and just BE ! Feel it and enjoy it ! Yes, that's freedom, that's detoxing the mind, just for a short moment. If we manage to do this once a day, what a start in the right direction !!

Happiness is ..... being a human being !

“Happiness depends on ourselves.”according to Aristotle.

Lots of love, light, peace and wisdom

The true nature of Nature !

A very warm monday greeting to everyone of our readers. The solstice has come and gone, as has the super moon. I was most suprised to have had such a good nights sleep, the full moon usually keeps me awake. Last night was different, I felt very relaxed and in tune with myself and Mother Earth. I took the opportunity of placing my crystals outside in the moonlight to cleanse and recharge. This morning I could feel the new restored energy in both them and in myself ! I dont think there has ever been a more important time in our lives to simply sit and just BE. We are so very busy throughout the day and into the night, when are our minds ever still ? When we sleep ? Even during sleep we are busy sorting through the events of the day, dealing with stress and filtering out the input received. Not many people are waking up feeling well rested and fresh and ready for new stressors and problems to be dealt with. Keep this up day in and day out and I can only imagine that madness will follow. At the very least, dis ease in some form or other.  There are some very easy solutions, you need to have the desire and to make the time, thats all it takes. 20 minutes to restore the mind - body connection, just 20 minutes out of your day. There is NO reason why we cannot all manage this. Instead of watching a tv series or reading or chatting on the phone, make the time to sit somewhere quietly and participate in either a Yoga Nidra session or a short meditation. Yoga Nidra is practiced lying down and takes you into a deep theta state. if its a meditation you want to do, try stay upright and remain as focused on either a mantra or your breath as possible. If you do this outdoors, tune into the feel of the air on your skin, the sound of the birds, the neighborhood or the very nature itself. Make your body still, with practice, this helps to still the mind and a deep sense of LASTING peace will be experienced. Science has proven that these 2 techniques will help alleviate blood pressure issues, insomnia, aggression, irritability, mood swings, nervous disorders, muscular tension, behaviour issues, ADD and so many more. It seems that you cannot afford NOT to take just 20 minutes of your busy schedule to empower yourself with the tools to survive another day in the concrete jungle of our lives. I have online, easy yoga techniques recorded for you as well as easy and short meditation recordings. Mail me for the link to these  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.   and take the first step in the direction of good , responsible habits towards a new more youthful and fresh YOU ! Its so simple, nature does it all for you, just be in it !

Your heart..

Your heart..

So the Wellness fair has been and gone. The numbers were disappointing but we did have a serious issue with parking as the school had sports on as well . The planning for this kept me  busy for many months and now that its over i'm wondering what to sink my teeth into !

My two children came to spend a few days with me and we went up into Zululand . It gave me a great idea for affordable" South African Bush to beach Safaris". We went on a 2 day trip and were most excited to see so many of the big 5 up close and personal   This is in the planning stages but I will post it up as soon as all the costs have been worked out.

The heading of this article " Your heart is the size of the ocean, go find yourself in its hidden depths " appeals to me so much as I feel we need to discover our true natures more than ever before ! We need to go inwards and find out more about ourselves, how special we are, how well made we are, how fragile we are. Maybe then we will realise just how connected we actually are. None of us escape heart ache, pain, suffering, loss, sadness, despair or loneliness. I am certain we all experience these emotions at some stage in our lives. It is how we deal with them that counts. We make the decision to cry, or to smile. By choosing to smile, we help spread more love and happiness as opposed to increasing the negativity of pain and suffering. So how about taking some quiet time each day, have a date with yourself and discover the very depths of your OWN soul and personality ! Try it, it only requires 20 minutes of your time.

Walk gently, with care and thoughfulness

Wellness Fair KZN

"I wish that the message of peace may be experienced through yoga, which is not only a culture of the body but the evolution of the self." ~ B.K.S. Iyengar

Good day to everyone of our readers. The weekend is upon us and that brings with it the much awaited Wellness fair in KZN , Umhlali primary School. I hope to see as many of you there as possible. www.wellnessfairkzn.com for a full list of events.

After viewing the "Marigold Hotel" the other night I had to laugh at the changes happening around and within me. In the movie there is a comment " At my age I don't have the time to buy green bananas anymore..." With the illusion of time having quickened, (you decide) it seems that we are pacing through life at a great rate of knots. I cherish every moment that I am able to take in stillness of heart, mind and soul, they are rare indeed. My physical body is showing signs of the carelessness I gave to it while living and loving the last half century. I wear each wrinkle, freckle and grey hair with great joy and love ! I have enjoyed my day in the sun for more than its worth. Over the last 2 weeks i watched, with amusement, an organic granadilla (passion fruit) change from a beautiful smooth green skin to a wrinkled, dry and almost purple skin. (this is actually when it was ripe and most delicious to eat ) I did not eat it and next I looked, it had turned mouldy and was beginning to breakdown, right there, quietly in my fruit bowl. This fascinated me as I considered all living things doing just the same, its just a matter of time. We  have to all undergo this same event, regardless. We may as well do it with laughter and love.  Make a point of enjoying life to the full, with a gentleness and understanding, before we start growing mouldy .

Lots of love to everyone , keep on shining

Sharpen the mind, harden the body, soften the heart !

Namaste ! The second half of the year 2013 is looming on the horiizon. The past few weeks have been particulalrly busy, fast paced and a time bomb of emotions with all the partial eclipses we have experienced. Most of my friends and clients have not been particularly aware of these lunar events, yet everyone has noticed a certain amount of emotional turmoil or reactions. Last week was the Super moon of 2013. ( closest it comes to earth in the year.) While being spectacular to view at moonrise, it has a deep influence on our watery composition of our body. I kept up my lunar salutations, soft and gentle, it certainly helped to keep my emotions in check and connected most deeply with my feminine side. Take time in each day to do a mental self check. Ask yourself if you are aware of your breath, of your movements, of your thoughts, of your emotions, this will help internalise the many things we need to release and let go of in order to start the healing process on the cellular level. On my weekend retreat a while back, my saying was " Release, let go or be dragged !" Mindfully take stock and move forward feeling lighter, happier and more positive. Practice the breathing techniques as discussed previously and in a few days i will add the next one.

We still have a few places available for upcoming dolphin/yoga trip in Ponto July 21-26th R5500 per person.

Meanwhile, on and off the mat, tread gently, wisely and mindfully.

Empower yourself with good health today !

Wellness Fair KZN

We all know that our health is indeed our wealth. Yet it is still the most taken for granted of all things in our lives. Only when we have a sore throat, toothache, belly upset or something, are we aware of just how much pain we could be in, day in and day out if we were to succumb to some dis "ease." Our health is so effected by what we eat, breathe, think and do, yet even this we are mostly unaware of. Lets make a conscious effort, from right here, right now, to live in our physical bodies, aware of the energy body as well as the mental and spiritual bodies. These 4 bodies live together, are an integral part of each other and so influence one another, we cannot treat them as if they are separate. From this moment, take charge, breathe with awareness, shop with awareness, eat with awareness and then, most difficult of all, think with awareness. I will write more next time on the actual different layers of these bodies to help you understand them better.

In closing, please support our WELLNESS FAIR in KZN at Umhlali primary school, sat 8th June 9am to 5.30pm . You can view the events timetable on www.wellnessfairkzn.com Lots of activities for the whole family with healthy foods and stalls of interest.

A cleansing breathing technique

A cleansing breathing technique

All living creatures depend on the breath

For it is the sustaining force of life itself,

Which determines how long we may live

Those who revere breath as a gift from the Universe

Shall live to complete their full span of life.

Upanishad.

So here we move into a new section of breath awareness for the next few days of practice.

Once again, sit comfortably, spine erect and shoulders relaxed. Try to balance each vertebra gently and naturally above the other. (Allowing  the natural curvatures of the spine without hyper extending them.) Take a few moments to still your physical body as well as the mind. Breathe in deeply and fully with absolute awareness. Imagine a candle being held in front of your nostrils, on your exhalation blow a short and sudden blast of air out of both nostrils trying to snuff out the imaginary flame. Once again breathe in with both nostrils and then puff the air out and blow the candle out. You keep repeating this action with awareness to the out breath not on the in breath. You will automatically breathe in, so focus on sharp out breath. The abdominals will contract on the sharp exhalation. Make sure your shoulders and the rest of your body remains as still as possible. You will be aiming at 2 out breaths per second and to be able to continue for at least 300 repetitions. Build up to this slowly and be sure to keep it relaxed and without any strain at all. Start with a few rounds of say 30, followed by a deep full inhalation and exhalation, repeat 30 again and so on. Repeat this for a week and then increase the repetitions to 60 or 100 in a round. Eventually graduate  to 300 without stopping.

This is a cleansing breathing technique and will maybe make you feel like coughing a little, it is very effective in cleansing the lungs and oxygenating the blood.

It is very important to master this technique before moving on to any of the others.

I hope you enjoy it and do not hesitate to mail for more information if it is not clearly explained for you.

Conscious Breathing

Breathe with full awareness
5.0/5 rating (6 votes)

Conscious Breathing

Energise your entire body by breathing consciously and with awareness. Each and every moment of the day we are taking in oxygen and breathing out carbon dioxide, it is involuntary and is a matter of life or death. Yet most of us are not even aware of this simple gaseous exchange taking place throughout our lives. We are breathing in around 600cc with each breath. The tidal capacity of our lungs is around 6000cc Our lungs are capable of much greater efficiency than what we are experiencing "unconsciously" . Keeping in mind that the oxygen is held in the lungs while it is transferred into the bloodstream, it makes sense that the longer it's held in the lungs the more oxygen will be absorbed and transferred. Meaning that more oxygenated blood will flow around to all the cells of each and every organ in the body. So it's then reasonable to assume that the deeper we breathe, the more efficient this gaseous exchange. I have described a basic deep breathing technique for you to start practicing daily :

Sit in a comfortable position with the spine erect and head balancing comfortably on top of the spine with chin paralel to the floor. Relax shoulders, soften the eyes and start to breath with awareness. Be aware of each breath in, follow it as it flows in the nostrils, down the throat and into the lungs.Visualise the oxygen being transferred into the blood cells, then follow the carbon dioxide flowing backup and out nostrils on the exhalation. Be aware of the cooler air going in the nostrils and the slightly warmer air coming back out. Follow your breath for about 6-8 rounds. Now try to lengthen this  inhalation and exhalation.  Without taking tension into the body aim at 4 seconds in and 8 seconds out. Keep trying until you feel comfortable with this. 3/6 is also okay. See if you can practice deep breathing for 5 minutes x 2 each day. This is the introduction to Pranayama, where eventually we will be holding the breath and increasing gaseous exchange even further. It is most important to take this step by step and to practice daily before progressing to the next level.

The key to safe and effective breathing is to stay relaxed in body, as well as in mind and for regular practice.
