Celebrating Women

The Feminine

Celebrating Women

So here we are in the month of August, celebrating the feminine aspect of each and every one of us. Yes, even the men have the feminine side, so embrace it , celebrate it and remember it's the balancing of the masculine and feminine that keeps our homeostasis. We need both the positive (masculine ) energy and the negative (female) energy to sustain us in a healthy and productive way. Keep in mind that most days, and even at different times during the same day, one or the other will be more active. The feminine energy is represented by the moon, it is passive, coolling, controlled via the Ida meridian or nadi that wraps around the spine and is activated via the left nostril and in conjunction with the right side of the brain.

The feminine energy conjures thoughts of peace, love, compassion and gentle behaviour. Don't for a moment imagine that this gentle natured feminine self is a pushover. She can be moved into fiery action, into the warrior woman, if her family or loved ones are threatened in one way or another. I think the secret to being in your own feminine power is to be able to step back and think carefully before responding to any situation. The feminine is inclined to be responsive emotionally and can often lead to unnecessary conflict. The words of wisdom from somewhere long forgotten, "Pick your battles," ring true for the warrior woman.

Yoga helps to bring balance to the emotional, mental, physical and spiritual aspects of ourselves. In this way we are better able to contribute to a happier more peaceful and loving society. As a mother we are able to juggle daily events in a calm yet supportive way, just the way we should be holding our Yoga postures. Calm, steady and supportive. Sthira and Sukkah.

For the month of August, let the love flow, feel the soft yet powerful energy of your feminine selves rise to the surface and spread outwards into your families and throughout the neighborhood. If we start the changes in our own homes and neighborhoods, we will see the difference in society around us. In allowing our self discovery to be steady and comfortable, progress will be made. Smile, love, be gentle and embrace your femininity !

Walk tall all you warrior women.

Yoga as a daily practice

"yoga = to yoke, join "

Yoga as a daily practice

The original purpose of yoga practice is to influence, integrate and harmonise all of the 5 energetic layers of the human being. These koshas (sanskrit name) are energetic layers or sheaths that move from the outermost layer of skin to the deep spiritual core, moving from the more dense physical body to the much lighter spiritual body. These make up the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual or soul bodies. Yoga works on the physical body by alleviating stiffness, removing physical blockages such as tiredness and various diseases by moving the energy around as it was designed to do. It works on the energy body by regenerating the different organs and systems with rejuvenating energy. Yoga influences the mental state by balancing the left and right hemispheres of the brain with regular asanas and breathing techniques. It helps to strengthen the mental concentration, self discipline and therefore helps develop awareness of the spiritual body for meditation and thus leads to a higher sense of self awareness. By following a simple 30 minute daily routine, yoga will help increase not only your quantity, but more importantly your quality of life.

Weekend of Self Reflection

I hope the short article on patience and perseverance struck a chord last week and that you all managed to go gently, "flow with grace and hold with ease. " This applies to all aspects of our daily lives. We rush around like headless chickens, with very little consideration as to why, how and where it's all going. I am hosting a weekend 13-15th Sept (fully booked) and again 18-20th Oct in Magaliesberg, to try and gain the upper hand on self reflection. This is a weekend of yoga postures, conscious breathing and special time set aside for the pondering on carefully chosen questions which will lead you to a deeper understanding of yourself and where you are in the grand scheme of things. It is designed to help bring you back homewards, to your essence and thereafter it will be easier to maintain the practice on your own. It is vital to make quiet time for yourself. This helps with the management of stress, health of the mental, emotional  and physical and keeps the body in a good, well balanced state. In perfect equilibrium, the way we were designed to be.Come join us and learn how to maintain a well balanced lifestyle, manage stress on all levels and to just enjoy life on a deeper more meaningful  level.

All meals  on this weekend are vegan and it gives a great idea of just how easy this discipline can actually be. Simple, nutritious conscience free meals are provided for you to enjoy. Lessons in healthy meal plans are also available on request. Weekends for weight loss are an option for those wishing to kick off on a new eating plan for the start of Spring.

Inquiries for any of these, or to request weekends in your areas, can be directed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call 0840902083

Energy body

energy does matter

Energy body

When i go on my Yoga retreats or trips, I always have a plan or general thought of what I will be offering over the few days. Without fail, the collective energy of the group ends up dictating what we actually end up studying ! While in Mozambique recently, we went to work through healing with a little help from our cetaceans (dolphins), yoga asanas and meditation. The week unfolded into a study of the energy centres of our bodies and how they influence and effect us. At the end of out time together we had formed a close bond of united energy, having collectively spent time discussing, thinking, moving, eating and sleeping. On our first trip out on the dolphin boat, as soon as we sighted the dolphins, everyone present had a huge grin on their faces . They never fail to pass on their "happy, vibrant energy" to us all in their close proximity. It is as if they do this intentionally and with love ! Instinctively we "pick" this vibe up and transfer it into an emotional response. It will never cease to amaze me ! Some people never venture into the ocean to swim with these magical creatures of Neptune's, content to view them from the surface gaining the same benefits ! It has been documented that dolphins gravitate to a pregnant human and show them much attention, as well as those we label "mentally challenged". This could be as simple as depression. The dolphins pick up on our energies and display great interest in certain people. They chatter and click away to us and each other, I'm sure they believe we understand them ! If we allow ourselves a little time of mediation each day, just that time alone in silence, we can tune into the space that allows us to feel the energy bodies of each and everyone. Some of us are already more in tune, while others need to practice and flex their energetic muscles so to speak. Training is all it requires, just like everything else on this Yogic journey, put in the time and you will reap the benefits. One of my teachers compare our minds to a muddy pond. In trying to clear this pond and gain better vision within, he suggests that each day you deposit a cupful of water. Many days of this and the mud will be less as the water becomes more, eventually clearing and visibility will be great ! Take the time spent on your mats as the cup full  of water and see the benefits over time. One step, one day and slowly everything becomes clear.

Courage, faith and love WILL get us where we aspire to be !

Conscious Breathing

Breathe with full awareness
5.0/5 rating (6 votes)

Conscious Breathing

Energise your entire body by breathing consciously and with awareness. Each and every moment of the day we are taking in oxygen and breathing out carbon dioxide, it is involuntary and is a matter of life or death. Yet most of us are not even aware of this simple gaseous exchange taking place throughout our lives. We are breathing in around 600cc with each breath. The tidal capacity of our lungs is around 6000cc Our lungs are capable of much greater efficiency than what we are experiencing "unconsciously" . Keeping in mind that the oxygen is held in the lungs while it is transferred into the bloodstream, it makes sense that the longer it's held in the lungs the more oxygen will be absorbed and transferred. Meaning that more oxygenated blood will flow around to all the cells of each and every organ in the body. So it's then reasonable to assume that the deeper we breathe, the more efficient this gaseous exchange. I have described a basic deep breathing technique for you to start practicing daily :

Sit in a comfortable position with the spine erect and head balancing comfortably on top of the spine with chin paralel to the floor. Relax shoulders, soften the eyes and start to breath with awareness. Be aware of each breath in, follow it as it flows in the nostrils, down the throat and into the lungs.Visualise the oxygen being transferred into the blood cells, then follow the carbon dioxide flowing backup and out nostrils on the exhalation. Be aware of the cooler air going in the nostrils and the slightly warmer air coming back out. Follow your breath for about 6-8 rounds. Now try to lengthen this  inhalation and exhalation.  Without taking tension into the body aim at 4 seconds in and 8 seconds out. Keep trying until you feel comfortable with this. 3/6 is also okay. See if you can practice deep breathing for 5 minutes x 2 each day. This is the introduction to Pranayama, where eventually we will be holding the breath and increasing gaseous exchange even further. It is most important to take this step by step and to practice daily before progressing to the next level.

The key to safe and effective breathing is to stay relaxed in body, as well as in mind and for regular practice.

Homeostasis

Suddenly the cooler weather is upon us here in KZN but I just love the warm days we still experience right through  the winter months. It will be my 2nd winter here on East coast and I am loving it !  While taking a dip in the ocean last Tuesday it occurred to me that here in Ballito we have no excuse for depression, lethargy, negative thoughts etc. as all you need to do is take a plunge ! The warm Indian ocean is so healing, the salt content alone will change your mental state and the “fizz” of the white water is so energizing that it leaves you feeling ready to take on the world.  That is the “stoke”  surfers take with them  into their day , after they have their morning surf.  Only grumpy surfer I know of is the one who is unable to be in the water for reasons such as injury or other commitments.  Try it out for yourselves, it’s on your doorstep and it’s free !

Last week we discussed how we literally are what we eat. Staying with this vein of thought, here is another reason or two to be more aware of what we place in our mouths. Every 35 days our skin is replaced. Our liver is replaced about every month. These cells necessary for this rejuvenation are made up from the food we eat. So it is only logical that the quality of our nutritional intake is directly responsible for the types of cells which will be formed. What you eat, literally becomes you. You have a choice of what you wish to be made of. So remembering what we have discussed previously, try to eat as many of your “greens” as raw, fresh and organic as possible !  If you try to follow this rule, your physical body will remain energized and in a state of homeostasis (well-balanced). Capable of allowing you to concentrate more fully on the other all important bodies we are made up of.

The Path of Grace

Compliments of the Season to each and every one of you !  As the year 2012 winds down I find myself experiencing similar feelings to when I have walked the labyrinth. As you probably all know, when walking the path inwards, it is symbolic of the path towards self realization. It takes us out of the ego and to that which is within. The number of times the path takes you close to the centre and then leads you all the way out again, repeatedly, is just as it happens in our daily lives. So often we think we have discovered  the answers, only to find they have led to even deeper and more unanswerable questions. This is in fact, the journey inward. Towards  our Self . On our way inward (in the Labyrinth of life) we should work on sorting out the “stuff” that’s weighing us down. Consciously letting go of these things, ideas and fears that are holding us back from achieving all that is ours. Just as when we walk into the centre of the labyrinth, we sit and meditate, we should take stock here of how we feel, do we feel lighter, are we a cleaner page to fill with positive energy ? Once we feel this lightness of body, mind and spirit, we are empowered to boldly walk back out towards our “physical” lives and better equipped to manage them. As with the winding road inwards, so is it on the way outwards. Each time you think you are ready to embrace the world, as you touch on the outer  path, so you wind back inwards with more time to reflect, strengthen your focus until eventually you exit feeling ready, grounded and balanced. Follow this link to read more about the history of Labyrinths http://www.unitync.net/Labyrinth.html

I wish you all  the time to cleanse, reflect, let go, prepare for the new and enabled to walk boldly and confidently into 2013. May it be filled with much light, love, adventure and much yoga !

And of course AHIMSA

Self - realisation

Self - realisation

Hari Om friends, in the spirit of the upcoming celebrations I have a mind to offer some food for thought.

There is no problem of greater or of more moving importance confronting us humans, than that of possible awareness of our own consciousness, the deep significance of the place we occupy in the world as a whole , and of the PURPOSE we should first discover and then pursue. We wander from the cradle to the tomb, yet not knowing our true destination, which is not the tomb, but rather the discovery of our SUPER SELF. “Path of the Masters-Charan Singh”

Yoga offers us help in doing just that, finding self – realization. Regular practice strengthens and purifies the physical vessel, helps discipline the mind, keeps us healthy and more able to attend to our daily meditation .  It is as simple as it sounds, take, no , MAKE the time to attend to your physical health as it will then in turn take care of your spiritual wealth !

In closing, I guess what I’m saying, is enjoy the holidays but try not fall into the annual trap of over-indulging and starting 2013 filled with regrets.

Peace and love to you, your family and your friends

Ahimsa

Thank you for your kind words and gentle holding Cheryl – you were amazing in roping everyone in, reading the needs of the group and gently encouraging us to push the comfort zone boundaries. Well done and deep gratitude to you. I am still feeling the dolphin energy….” Linda

Hi Cheryl :) - I'm in my bedroom packing my school bag... I think I may be in for a culture shock tomorrow! You will never know how valuable your retreat was for me. The yoga was fabulous - I woke up today, did my sun salutes and went on a run! I'm so energised and contented. The food was inspiring as well, already on the drive home I was on your blog reading all your recipes and little articles. I hope very much to see you again, you have a talent for bringing out the best in people and in their bodies I think - I was so peaceful and carefree. Aaaaahhh I can't describe how grateful I am. With so many good wishes - Maia

Good Morning Cheryl :D - Words can't describe just how wonderful the yoga retreat was... But it was... Incredible... Amazing... Life-Changing. I've already scouted the net for yoga classes which are near to where I live. I am super excited to begin my "break-away" from the dreadful monotonous routine of 'eat-sleep-work'. The retreat taught me that balance is key in life :) So glad that my mum and I were able to make the trip. *HUGE HUG*... Aamena

Dear Cheryl, Thank you for a divine experience and weekend! It was my first with both SA Yoga Safaris as well as with Blue Butterfly, but definitely not the last ..... the setting, the surroundings, the arrangement, the spirit and the ambiance provided a physical and mental retreat beyond expectation. In the loving company of you all it will keep me in good spirits for a long, long time and I'm grateful!

Thank you Cheryl and all, and till we meet again keep well - with love, Marie,
